Bullet Penetration

Hello to all,
I was wondering recently how well a machine gun could penetrate a U-boat. Why I ask? Well, most U-boat on the bottom of the ocean have had their outer hulls rust away, yet their pressure hulls remain intact, a testament to the construction, thickness and quality of the steel used. The penetration of a US .50 machine gun round could easily go right through the outer hull, but would it penetrate the pressure hull? Could AP rounds go through the pressure hull?
