Hi Frank,
There might have been a few pieces of gen. purpose shoring dunnage stored in a deck locker or two, but nothing to speak of under deck because of lack of space.
Also, when one is 300ft below and water coming in through a crack in the pressure vessel, there is no time for damage control party deployment like on a large surface vessel because of lack of sub\'s reserve buoyancy. In such case, your only chance is to seal off the compartment if possible and blow all tanks promptly or bend over and kiss your rear goodbye. Cracks in the pressure hulls were mostly lethal. Cracks in pipes etc were dealt with as described below (Sleeves + valves) and usually cracked before the pressure hull. Rgds, RB
