Who really had the better submatrines of WWII??
Was the US Gato Class better than the Type VII and Type IX submarines..
in terms of offensive, and defensive.
DEFENSIVE:
the German U-boats could dive much deeper (depth charges take much longer to reach submarine and more time to manuver out of the way..
The best US, UK (even japan subs) could only dive to 400 ft, although some of the ultra late US ones could get 600,
The Type II\'s and Type IX uboats could get to 230 meters (750 ft)... and they was the shallow diving subs..
the Type VIIC/41 could dive to around 270-290 meters (875-942 ft) ..(reports from actual german crews).. Thats almost a 1000 ft.. awsome..
The Type 21 (it was in combat although never fired) could dive to (they estimated) past 300 meters maybe 350..
(975 ft to 1137 meters)
OFFNSIVE: pretty close, the Germans, and US had thier own torpedo troubles, thier torpedos when they did get thme working was both very deadly, the US had better radar, the Germans had better sonar (Type 21)..
The Germans faced much more technoligy in ASW than the US did against the much lower technoligy Japanese destroyers..
