lcdrusnret:
Called "Cutie" for subs. 'Twas a 19" battery-powered,"swimout" passive-acoustic weapon usually loaded in the After Torpedo room. It used a simple Mark 142 contact exploder mechanism.
The last time it was used in anger was when the USS TORSK (SS-423) launched one at a Japanese patrol boat. The boat lay on the bottom at 400 feet waiting for the
explosion. The CO launched a Mark 28, a 21" heavy, passive acoustic battery-powered
torpedo, and the explosions were close to each other. The Pacific war had been over for a day, but Torsk didn't know that.
