Wierd trivia from the pre-WWI American subs. They used phneumatic controls that vented into the boat. During the dive, the pressure would build until a poppit valve located at the top of the boat would open, so on a long dive, the boat would end up pressurised to the depth of the conning tower. From where the Commander was stationed, he could look out the open valve, directly into the sea! Don\'t know of any problem with bends. Test depth was 150 ft. but I doubt they spent much time that deep.
