Hi Peter,
Balkon Geraet, successor to the sensors arranged in half-moon fashion around fwd hydroplanes P&S, used essentially the same sensors as before but arranged in a more efficient pattern giving a clear listening arch of 270 degr. Instead of 24 \"Schwinger\" (bronze disc sensors) it had 48, thus was far more accurate in its graduation, i.e. determining which sensor was pointing most directly to the sound source.
This unit was used in type 7&9 as of late \'43 on newbuildings, also retrofitted in older ones in \'44. The unit plus the LUT (Lagen unabhaengiger Torpedo) made it possible for the Uboats to start shooting \"from the hip\"(fire and forget).
