Permit me to amplify some of the points raised in this topic.
Anders; The recoil of the hedgehog was reduced by ripple firing. only minor deck reinforcement was required. The single ( 3 barrel ) squid came into service in Castle class corvettes in mid 1943 and the twin ( 6 barrel ) in Loch class in early 1944
Tom and Anders; There was no speed restriction on using squid ( 0 to 18kts ). The main precaution was to avoid a sub which had been blown to the surface. For example,Loch Killin attacked U736 in the Bay and the squid explosion first countermined a \"gnat\" ( T5 ) astern of her and then the sub broke surface with her conning tower alongside the quarter deck so that the captain and some of the crew were able to step aboard dry shod !
Ger; No River class frigates were fitted with squid. Lochs only dropped a single charge on occassions when a \"scarer\" was needed to countermine a T5.
