Active Sonar in german subs?

I am trying to provide evidence as to whether or not german uboats and actually destroyers as well, used active sonar. My searching has shown that the germans had knowledge of, and experimented with it in the mid 30s. And I know that the type XXI uboat had a sonar dome of sorts.

Logic tells me they did, however I need facts and more info. Any info would be great.
