The schnorkel would be visible, and let off smoke. Running the diesels would also make a lot of noise. The vibration of the diesels and the schnorkel installation generally made the periscope unuseable. The schnorkel was limited in speed during operation to 4 or 5 knots, below top electric speed.

No, it would be very unwise to use a schnorkel during an attack.
