Mysterious U-boat??

Around June 14/15 1942, a U-boat sunk a freighter in the southern waters off the USA. One of the survivors, Archie Gibbs, was picked up by the U-boat and thereafter traveled aboard for four days! Then he was put aboard a passing ship by the U-boat commander! THE ONLY TELL-TALE SIGN OF \"WHAT\" U-BOAT this was , was a painting on the conning tower IT WAS THE PICTURE OF A WOMAN WITH BROWN HAIR. Can anyone help me identify this U-boat??? Archie Gibbs\' story was later told in LIFE Magainze. His book was printed in 1943 and tells of his tale aboard the boat! I\'m working on a book of \"individual\" stories of those taken aboard U-boats during the war! THANKS
