As I understand it - swamps were new allied tactics in hunting and attacking U-boats. Patrols of aircraft and ships would \"swamp\" a zone of water where there had been a reported sighting or radar contact. They would home in on the target and wait until it was forced to surface. Ironically, I suppose they borrowed the idea off the wolf packs. The process could take a number of days. The first victim is credited as being U-371.
What I still don\'t quite know is whether the U-boats would have been aware of the strength of assembled forces against them - or whether it would have been quite a (frightening) surprise?
