It was actually an Italian torpedo bomber , MY father was aboard at the time. see website glenroy.freeservers.com.
The website has the full story, A Sailors Odessy by cin c at time
Vicount cunningham also has it wrong,
U boat torpedo would have finished her - much bigger.
