About torpedo ventilation :

During the first years of WW2 the Germans had a lot of problems with the impact fused torpedos : the depth steering was erratic and torpedos ran too deep. (this was not a problem for magnetic fused torpedos as they should explode UNDER the target anyway)
It was finally accidentally discovered by U-94 (Ites) in 1942 that while ventilating (opening en closing ) torpedos, the chamber where the depth steering control device was located, got the air pressure then present in the u-boat. If the u-boat had been submerged for some time, this pressure was not anymore the normal, outside pressure. This difference in pressure caused the control gear to steer the torpedo too deep.
