Just heard from Keith Gill, he wrote:
"The inside of the tube is ABOUT 297 1/2 inches from end to end. The firing part of the tube length is slightly shorter than this. The problem is that I cannot crawl through to the front to get a measurement of the true tube part of it, I can only bump the tape up against the end (outer) door. The measurement point at the rear of the tube is only at the back end of the tube that the torpedo rides in, this does not include the thickness of the door itself.
There is a piston inside the tube behind the torpedo. I will have to get that measurement later."
So, on U-505, the tubes were no longer than 755.6 cm(297.5 inches). Call it 755 cm or 7.55 m?
I believe this calls for a pledge to the U-505 preservation fund, so thank you Keith.
