For german WW2-pistols (all variants of Pi 1, Pi 2 and Pi 3, as well as the Pi 42 for F5 torpedoes as far as I know), the arming-principle used was to move the boostercharge back towards the firingpins (or elektric plug in case of electric detonator). This was achieved by the impeller rotating the centre-spindle, which in turn moved the booster-charge along a guidance-sleeve.

The Pi 4 pistol (for the T5) also applied a similar principle, but here the firing pins were moved down towards the boostercharge.

In any case: The impeller would in no way "fall off". It was very securly fastened to the central spindle (Pi 1-3 and 42, which in turn was a critical component in regards of the mechanic/ percussion function of the pistol.
