That's partly correct: Bronze was indeed used in the beginning, but as expensive raw-materials like this became sparse, bronze (and brass for propellers and plugs etc.) were replaced by steel.
The whitehead-tail of the G7a was even nickle-plated early on in production (looks like chrome), but this was also stopped (all G7a in postwar service had the tailpiece painted as a corrosion-protective, but I haven't seen any photos indicating this was applied by the germans).
