Hi All,
I have read several reports of U-boats firing from 200 meters. Well inside the 400 meters they were trained to fire from but they sometimes did it none the less. It probably would have been the end of the U-boat had the target been loaded with ammunition though.
The safety device mentioned was a small propeller mounted on the nose of the detonator on the German torpedoes I am familiar with. Spun by water pressure from the torpedo moving through the water it eventually got to a position that allowed the torpedo detonator to do its job. I think this worked differently on the acoustic torpedoes but am not sure of the details.
