Eric,
there was at least on U-boot damaged by blast when she torpedoed an ammunition carrier while inside the convoy columns, but at this time I cannot identify her, I have only recently started a new database on damages;
the longest succesful shot of the war (to my knowledge at least) was fired by IJN I-19 (Cdr Kinashi): a 6-torpedo salvo of which 2 hit the CV USS Wasp, one the BB North Carolina & the last one went on to hit DD O'Brien at over 5 miles, purely by accident, but nonetheless an impressive achievement. There are some cases of US subs which fired from out to sea towards open anchorages and actually scored, particularly against Quelpart island roads, but I don't recall any of the shots esceeding 3 miles.
Regards, Brian
