Thanks a lot for info on U.S. wire guided torp ! That was new to me.
There were 3 seeker/guidance systems which were designated for the T5. "Lerche" is already mentioned. "Pfau" from company AEG was passiv acoustic and used crystal microphones with a phasedifference method. (First T5 had "Amsel" seeker with solenoid microphones and amplitude method).
"Geier" from company Atlas/Minerva was an active acoustic seeker with 2 receiving and 2 sending oscillators. This had to be combined with one of the other passive methods because the range was limited to 250 m. But it had a very good stability against counter-measures.
These seekers were developed throughout the war and tested but have never seen combat. Others (Märchen, Taube, Fasan,Kondor) were not designated for T5 and never finished.
I found no proof that a wire guided torpedo was used in combat.
The torpedo launch system of the XXI boats used a compressed air control system which let only as much air into the tube as was necessary for the launch. The torpedo was airtight fit to the opening of the tube and let all air behind. The tubes were mounted in an angle of 2 degrees down to the front so that the air remained in the upper tube end and could be pumped out. When the torpedo got out of the tube the incomming seawater kept the air inside additionaly. Only a few little bubbels escaped but were unimportand.
