Don't get me wrong, I'm a strong advocate of "Diesel Boats Forever," but we must recognize their limitations. To be fair, there are more than diesel-electrics out there, and they are making significant gains. This is most true in the littoral or nearshore environment where the endurance limitations are less restrictive.
However, they are a long ways from being able to project power globally, like nuclear fleet can.
The tactical and strategic planning for a mission should always govern the weapon development choice. If we resort to defining the mission by the tools available, we will fail to meet the changing needs of the future environment.
