The analogy between a "towed array," designed to stream quietly behind a submarine, and a rope trailed behind a sailboat at the surface, escapes me. Unless of course the rope was designed to stream quieltly behind the sailboat.

Acoustics (sonar) is a well documented field of physics with much information on the web, and in physics texts. You should have no problem finding information. I can offer a couple of websites, including:
