Given that the conning tower was oriented vertically and the hull-plating at the opening for the conning tower was oriented horizontally, the most likely type of weld-joint between the two would be a tee weld at about 90 degrees. As I recall, the thickness of the hull-plate was about 25-30 mm, which points towards a tee-weld with the root (back side) of the weld being back-gouged to clean metal and filled in from inside the hull. I'm no expert either.
