Thomas, I wanted to let you know I have posted the USN Design Study on the type XXI boat referred to in the replies above on my website at [uboatarchive.net] I am in touch with two veterans who served in the USN crew of U-2513. They both spoke very highly of the boat and reported that initially, during its time as a target for ASW exercises, the boat would easily evade its pursuers using its high underwater speed or its nearly silent creeping motors. After a couple of years, the technical capabilities and tactics of the ASW forces caught up and things evened out. As Ken Dunn points out, there is quite a bit of "not invented here" in the USN Design Study. There is is no question that the boat was revolutionary and that had there been time the defects would have been worked out. Cheers, Jerry
