Well, I have met such a notice only on few web pages.

The U-Boats were adapted to launching torpedoes with that speed -
the TVRe (TDC) as well as Vorhalttabelle (tables with angle shots for
specific conditions) have position with torpedo speed 44 KTs.

But I have reviewed some torpedoes firing reports available on the
page uboatarchive.net - the G7a shots were performed with maximum speed
40 KTs. The interesting thing is, that the commanders marked the 40 KTs
speed as "voll" - full speed. So probably it was the fastest setting used
on the U-Boats.

On the uboatarchive.net I have found two more related fragments:
"FAT-1 – Air-propelled, always. Has three speeds (30, 40, and 44 knots), but is shot
with only 30 and 40 knots—and practically always with 30 knots."

"A red bar on G7a, torpedo indicates that it is not to be fired with
a speed setting of 44 knots during trials, in order to preserve its mechanism."

Yes, look at chapter III - "TORPEDO ARMAMENT AND EQUIPMENT" - External
Adjustment Fittings in the british report on U-570
(http://www.uboatarchive.net/U-570BritishReport.htm):
"Speed - High, medium and low."

The setting gear for the speed was located on the torpedo tube near the
bow bulkhead, close to the housing enclosing the torpedo stop bolt
and triggering latch.
