the conning towers had several upgrades and minor changes so its hard to determine what kind of armor was used at which date. for sure the armor was just to protect the crew for machine guns of aircraft, anything bigger would penetrate the conning tower and everthing else of the boat since an uboat was never designed to fight by altillery against other war ships.
