Periscopes

Hi

My question concerns periscopes on the type 1XD type uboats. I recently purchased the book Geschichte des deutschen U-Bootbaus, a great book!
I noticed plans for the late model 1Xd2 boats (1943/44), and these boats were equiped with 2 periscopes. However I then observed a plan for the type 1xd1, and noticed 3 periscopes, one that was situated forward on the conning tower, and two that descend through the middle of the tower. Would anyone know why this 1941 plan would show 3 periscopes, and was this normal for the early type 1xd boats.
