Exhaust gas valves and silencers, got it thank you!

The blue print photo I attached above is dated 1943, and shows no bow modification and no addition of the snorkel. I know U177 and U178 when out on their first and second patroles with only 10 outer torpedoes, why if there was place for 12 torpedoes, only take 10 and that on a trip to the Indian ocean.

Sorry for all the questions, but I really want to understand this.
