Hi,
generally, on board of the U-Boat were several oxygen flasks. When the amount in the oxygen in the air inside pressure hull decreased critically, the oxygen was admitted from these flasks (through the water-traps to control the flow) to the ventilation system and distributed through the boat.
The other critical factor was the level of the carbon dioxide. It was removed by means of the potash cartridges. These cartridges were connected to the inlets of the ventilation trunks. To decrease the level of the carbon dioxide, the ventilation fans were turned on. They sucked the air from the compartments through the cartridges (were the carbon dioxide was absorbed) and distributed through the boat.
The last resort were personal rescue gears (Tauchretters) manufactured by Drager company. They contained the individual small flask with oxygen and potash cartridges.
Generally, if you are interested in the U-Boat technology, I recommend you the website: [www.uboatarchive.net]
There you can find detailed description of the type IXC U-Boat:
as well as manual for type VIIC:
The many subsystems on these two types are similar, so these two documents should give you sufficient information.
