You can look into the book "Vom Original Zum Modell - U-Boot Typ VII".
On page 42 you can see the glass gauges for port regulating tanks.
On this photo, you can see, that perforated covers were not installed,
only steel covers with a sight slit. You can also see, that (most
likely) the glass gauges were pasted with some kind of strip (maybe
something similar to nowadays adhesive tape) - to prevent from
spreading the glass fragments when broken (due to shock).
