My Grandad served aboard HMS Alynbank and I've done a little research on the vessel. It had been used extensively in the Artic convoys where the Luftwaffe was a serious threat. Then in 1943, it took part in the Torch Landings in North Africa - it was sent to support the most easterly landing well inside the Mediterranean. After the defeat of Axis forces in North Africa, Alynbank was used in support of landings in Sicily. There are tombstones in Sicily to crewmembers from HMS Alynbank who died in battle - so I assumed it had suffered damage. One final point - when Alynbank was sunk as a block-ship, it was not6 submerged. It may well have remained sufficiently high above the water to allow the use of its anti-aircraft capability. Hope that helps. John Dalgleish.
