<HTML>Hi Michael,
Vimiera was a "V" class destroyer, built by Swan Hunter, launched 22/6/1917. 1090 ts, 91.40 m Lpp, 94.0 m oa, B 9.00 m, d mean 3.26 m, speed 34 originally
By 1940 she was converted to an "escort" destroyer, by removing part of the armament & increasing the fuel tankage. In 1940 she carried 4-102 mm AA guns, 4-20 mm Oerlikon and 8 .50 cal (12.7 mm) mguns with a crew of 125.
During the Allied evacation she is recorded as having carried 1400 men on a single trip back to England, probably a world record for a ship that size
Between 24-26/6 provided gunfire support to the defenders of Calais then went to convoy escort off the East Coast and remained on that duty until lost.
Lost: on 9/1/42, while escorting a southbound convoy she was mined and sunk off East Spindle Buoy, in the Thames estuary. The mines had been laid by S-boote, I'm still working on which Flotilla was responsible.
