my father william cairns was an engineer on the albatross. he was on shore helping salvage wrecks when she was torpedoed he told me that it was a one man torpedo which after the man fired it would then give himself up. Dad also said she sank but was later was refloated & taken back to england.apparently the torpedo went straight through the stores and the sailor who ran the store was never found. the hospital ship was also sank in the same way inspite of being the only one lit up displaying the red cross the man who fired this one was shot not taken prisoner. yours angela barton nee cairns ps my father took me onboard the albatros before she sailed for normandy but i do not have any photos of her.
