U-boat railings

<HTML>Hello,

Occasionally we can see a photo of an U-boat with hand railings carried throughout the length of the boat's deck, while on other photos there is no railing.
I understand the railing could be removed when the boat prepared for sea or fitted when she was to maneuvre on the surface (eg. in the harbour).
Am I right?
