Mentre, con altri tre cacciatorpediniere della 14a Flottiglia della Mediterranean Fleet (Jervis, Jackal e Lively) rientrava ad Alessandria dal fallito tentativo di intercettare un convoglio italiano diretto a Bengasi, nel pomeriggio dell’11 maggio il Kipling 1942 venne più volte attaccato da aerei da bombardamento tedeschi del X Fliegerkorps. Una prima incursione, portata alle 16.30 da quattordici Ju. 88 del 1° Gruppo del 1° Stormo Sperimentale (I./LG.1) decollati da Heraklion (Creta), era stata fatale al cacciatorpediniere Lively, che fu colpito e affondato. Successivamente avevano attaccato, senza alcun esito, nove Ju. 88 del 2° Gruppo del 1° Stormo Sperimentale (II./LG.1), decollati da Eleusis (Atene), al comando del capitano Gerhard Kollewe. Infine, verso le ore 20.00, durante un’ultima incursione di undici Ju 88 del I./L.G.1 (capitano pilota Joachim Helbig) – tornati all’attacco dopo l’affondamento del Lively e dopo aver svolto un rapido rifornimento ad Iraklion – il Kipling (capitano di fregata Aubrey St Clair-Ford) fu colpito in pieno assieme al Jackal ed affondò nello spazio di dieci minuti in lat. 32°28’N, long. 26°20’E, a circa 90 miglia da Marsa Matruch. A colpire e ad affondare il Kipling erano state le bombe sganciate dal velivolo pilotato dal capitano Helbig. Sopravvissero, raccolti dal Jervis, 221 uomini su un equipaggio di 250. Anche il Jackal affondò.
