From the limited information I have to hand HMCS Owen Sound appears to have been largely a western atlantic escort. She was commissioned in November 1943 and appears to have been part of Canadian Escort Group 9 operating between Nova Scotia and the UK. While escorting convoy SC154 on 10th March 44 Owen Sound was part of a successful three-ship (the others were HMCS St. Laurent and HMS Forester)attack on U-845. Initially seen on the surface the U-boat dived deep and was chased. The U-boat surfaced later to charge batteries and attacked the escorts with gunfire. All three ships returned fire which damaged the U-boats bridge and killed Captain Werner Weber. The German crew scuttled the U-boat shortly after.
In April 1944 Owen Sound was with EG9 on an independant patrol near Ireland when contact with U-311 was made close to the surface. The ships (HMCS Matane, Owen Sound, Swansea and Stormont) attacked with depth charges and Hedgehog and although, at the time, they thought they had lost contact with the U-boat, they had in fact sunk it. This was not confirmed until the early 1980s.
Owen Sound also appears to have been on convoy SC 163 from Halifax to Liverpool in Dec.1944, which was largely uneventful.
It seems unlikely that Owen Sound joined any Russian convoys.
All the best
