My father was on HMS Trinidad and survived and he died in the 1980s, aged 59 sadly. He never spoke about his experiences, and his mother's diary says he lost his best friend when the ship was torpedoed, but the diary didn't say his friend's name. We did attend a reunion at some point but I don't think he really knew anyone there. His name was Edward Whelan. I've scoured pictures but never seen him in any unfortunately. He may have worked with wiring. The only story I remember is that he was reading a book when the ship was hit (I'm assuming the story relates to the Trinidad and not to another ship that he was on), and it was one of The Saint books by Leslie Charteris – he felt it was an unlucky book and would never watch it on television when it became a tv series. My brother is applying for the Arctic Star, so that will be wonderful to have. It's only now in my 60s I realise how brave these men were.
