Further to what David H stated, HMS ROSS was an Old Hunt class M/S (to differentiate her from the Hunt class destroyers), whose pendant number in 1940 was probably N45 vice J45. Her previous name was HMS RAMSEY.

The RN pendant numbers changed sometime in 1940 but I have been unable to obtain an exact month when this occurred.
