My Dad Albert George Shepherd served on HMS Starwort as leading telegraphist during 1941/42 on the Arctic Convoys. I have his diary for 1941 and his description of that year is quite hair raising. As far I can gather he was on the ill-fated PQ17.
I live down in Cornwall but it is a fairly easy trip up the M5 to Gloucestershire if you are interested in reading his diary. My Dad died aged 55 in 1962 having come back from the war with TB from which he never really recovered but the more I find out about the convoys the more I am impressed at their fortitude.
