My father was Alexander Blyth. He was 18yrs old at this time, and quite skinny. The seamen tied a rope around him and lowered him into the sinking/burning ship. he grappled the wounded men and they hoisted both on to the deck. He got a few burns but otherwise was ok. He went to Buckingham palace and got the medal pinned on his chest by King George - I hope they all got a bit of leave and went together. He volunteered at 17 and was in the navy 8 yeras.He got called up in 1956 during the Suez Crisis but told them he would not fight the Egyptians, and threw his medal in the fire !
