L. Weiss,

As far as which version of the Type VII was best (or whenever 'best' is mentioned for that matter), it's very subjective.

If you rank them by:
most kills, then the VIIB.
greatest numbers and range, then the VIIC.
If diving depth, then the VIIC/41 or 42 which may have given you a slight edge in surviving a depth charge attack (for a while at least).

Not the boat to pick for your invasion idea. It was a small, nimble, 'efficient' (for the first half of the war at least)killing machine. The Porsche 911 Carrera 4 compared to the Porsche Cayenne sans 'S'(Type IX);-)

As far as drumbeater Type VII's, technically no. The true Drumbeaters were only the initial wave of 5 Type IX's (supposed to be 12). Many Type VII's later did attack the U.S. East Coast, with the help of Milk Cows and sacrificing some water for extra fuel. Gummi wrote a great article on the site that covers it in detail. Go to 'Boats', 'U-Boat Operations', 'Operation Paukenschlag', and enjoy.
