Thank you for hosting this forum. My grandfather, Frederick William Victor Blees II, served on PC-1128 and was killed in the typhoon in October of 1945. Here is what I found online:
PC-1128 was grounded in Typhoon Louise in Buckner Bay, Okinawa, on 10/9/45.
I have a book about Patrol Crafts of WWII titled "PC Patrol Craft of World War II" by Wm. J Veigele. It says in January of 1944 in New Caledonia, PC 1128 was blown off its moorings in 70 knot winds and collided with a destroyer which put a huge hole in the hull. The crew courageously saved it from sinking. It says the boat shot down a Japanese plane in the Philippines in December of 1944. It later rescued six men from the destroyer "Halligan" and mine sweeper "Skylark" when they both hit mines off Okinawa. It then describes its fate on 10/9/45.
I would love any information about my grandfather. His loss left a large hole in my family, especially for my mother who was three when he died. I do not know how to find his service record or anything. My mother has a letter from President Truman, which I guess was sent to any officer's family after they were killed. I do have the flag that covered his coffin, which my grandmother gave me.
I would be happy to call you or speak with anyone that knows more about the boat or my grandfather. I would like to make sure his service is not forgotten by my extended family and especially my two sons.
