H31 was a difficult seakeeper and was prone to 'dipping' in heavy density water - as numerous patrol reports make clear.

I knew Bernard Cranmer who sailed with Malcolm Wanklyn on H31 when Wanklyn achieved his first 'kill' in the litte H31, sinking UJ126. It was Bernard's view that the boat was unfit for active service. There was a serious problem with the hydroplanes which had not been remedied prior to her closs.
