Hi, Brian.
Your comment regarding the slow speed of the USS Direct is certainly correct. My dad indicated that this British "cruiser" was damaged so badly (I believe he said the bow was severely damaged) that it could make only very slow speed. I wonder if there's any chance this ship could have been a large destroyer instead? The official U.S. Navy citation specifically refers to a "cruiser", and the citation specifically states that the enemy submarine was German.
I know the Royal Navy sustained significant cruiser and destroyer losses in the Mediterranean. I had always assumed this is where the British ship was originally damaged.
