Hi Stephen,

El Lago was actually owned by the U.S. War Shipping Administration but operated by U.S. Lines although she sailed under the Panamanian flag. The account in the book below came from the statements of the captain and the engineer after their repatriation to the U.S. in 1945 so there are probably records on the sinking at the U.S. National Archives too.
