I have recently made contact with Mr George Smith, former crewmember of the HMS Beaumaris Castle. He has been interviewed by the BBC, and his story can be read here:

George Smith
[www.bbc.co.uk]

He has confirmed that a mountain recovery mission did occur and was carried-out by the crew of HMS Beaumaris Castle. The year is unsure, but either 1943 or 1944. The place is certain - the recovery occured on the island of St Kilda. A plane crashed into the mountain and killed all on-board. Half the Beaumaris Castle crew - around 25 - rowed the lifeboats to the small, shingle beach. Most of the men went up the hill to get the bodies - Mr Smith was incharge of collecting the personal possessions of the men. The bodies were put on the Beaumaris Castle and taken to the US authorities on St Lewis.

It now becomes a matter of matching the various plane crashes on St Kild, to the recovery mission of the Beaumaris.

Thank you.
