HMS Penzance

I recently learned that my father-in-law was a survivor of the HMS Penzance in 1940. I know virtually nothing about his naval career, but I wonder if anyone has information about this vessel beyond the little I can find by searching the web. I realize that another ship was built later and given the same name, but it is the one which was torpedoed in 1940 in which I am interested.
I would be interested in learning where it set out from, where it was headed, where she went down, what happened to the ship which picked up the survivors and then was hit by the same U-boat. Anything at all -- I feel very guilty that I did notknow about this part of his life.
Many thanks.
