I believe the person you are referring to is Maschinistenmaat Karl Eschenberg of the U 104. Eschenberg was the sole survivor of the U 104, which was depth charged by HMS Jasmine on April 25, 1918. He escaped from the forward torpedo room after the pressure equalized and he popped to the surface.
