Thanks for your resposes to my query, To help you get the feel of the situation I will attempt to reproduce the text of the log entry as it appears on the copy from the microfilm,with advance apologies for any incorrect spellings or perhaps the odd missing letter!
U44 27/3//16. 20 miles West by South of Coningbeg Lighthouse,Ireland.

Dampfer in Sicht.
Getaucht und Angriff gefahren. Dampferist 6000 Tonnen gros,schwarzer Rumpf,dunkelgraus Aufbauten,zionlich tief geladen keine Abzeechen.
Bugschu? gefuert, Treffer Funk v 30,Dampfer sackt vorn weg. Besatzung verla?t in 2 Booten das Schiff. Unter Nasser abgeleufen, da Kurz nach dem Schu? 2 Fischdampfer sich nahern.
aufgstaucht. Auder den Fischendampfern kommt noch ein Bewacher mit 2 Schornsteiene? neben dem Dampfer in Sicht. Dampfer kommt aus Sicht, stark vorlastig, anscheinend sinkend.

I have used a question mark in the place of a letter that is indistinct, and of course iIhave been unable to produce any grammatical symbols and trust this does not impede the sense too much.</HTML>
