Deryck,

This information conflicts with my own findings that the vessels involved in the 'Manchester Engineer' torpedoing were the Trawlers 'Heron' and 'Margate'the latter having all survivors on board and both trawlers took her in tow toward shore only to be ordered by sloop 'Lavender' that she would take over the towline. She was joined by sloop 'Laburnum' who took a second line aboard and despite the unease of the skippers of the 'Engineer', 'Heron' & 'Margate the latter two were told to carry out escort duties. The tow failed as predicted by the three Masters probably becuause of the increased towing speed. The survivors were handed over to the tug/tender 'Stormcock'and landed at Queenstown. This information is gleaned from the three Captains' reports of the sinking.The Captain of the 'Manchester Engineer' is my wife's Grandfather.
