<HTML>Brian,

I do the WWI fate information for this website and also work with divers to find and identify WWI U-boat wrecks.

You are correct that a WWI U-boat was lost off Dunbar -- that was the U 77, lost through the explosion of one of her own mines. This was a surprising and recent discovery. It has not made it into most reference works yet, so even aside from the location, I would doubt it's the wreck you're refering to.

The incident I think you are refering to occurred on January 28, 1918 in or just east of the Firth of Forth. The Royal Navy claimed to have sunk UB 63 there. The German official history rejects this claim, noting that UB 63 was assigned to operate in the Irish Sea and sail via Dover and thus would not have been off the Firth of Forth. There is some chance that this claim is correct with a different U-boat sunk -- this is one of the things I am currently working to prove or disprove.

Best wishes,

Michael</HTML>
